FAQ

What can I do to help to save the Birdhouse Monument  ?

On April 30 2025, Adrin Nazarian and the Los Angeles City Council UNANIMOUSLY voted to designate the Mellenthin Apartments a Historic Landmark.

However, a loophole in the ED1 directive created a never seen before scenario, where a designated Landmark

CAN be DENIED CEQA, AND STILL BE DEMOLISHED due a City Planning 'interpretation' of the Housing Crisis Act.

- City Planning wrongfully 'interpreted' that SB330 and HCA would 'override' an active historic designation in progress failing to to conduct an enviromental review as prescribed under CEQA 15064.5

- The site's historic status became known as of Sept 24 2024, when the HCM application was deemed complete - yet, planning ignored this and unlawfully applied SB 330 vesting provisions to override an active HCM nomination (65913.10)

Ask Nazarian to file a motion to invalidate City Planning's vesting and plan approval of the project, and to have the project revoked based on CEQA non-compliance.

In addition, Nazarian also needs to remind City Planning of their role as the lead agency, as it is their responsibility to trigger CEQA for a Historical Resource under the threat of demolition, IF the developer's plan proceeds, based on the changed condition that the site now is a DESIGNATED HISTORICAL RESOURCE.

EMAIL COUNCIL MEMBER ADRIN NAZARIAN

and demand a Council Motion to correct City Planning's violation of CEQA !!

councilmember.nazarian@lacity.org

Write a personal email to Adrian Nazarian, urging him to take action to resolve the ED1 ambiguity.

A Planning Department 'Memo' issued in February falsely 'interprets' that it is possible to undercut the HCM nomination in progress, by refusing simply 'racing' plans to some imaginary 'finish line'.

THAT DOES NOT MAKE A DECLARED HISTORIC MONUMENT 'UN-HISTORIC'.

This sets a dangerous precedent for any and all future designation processes, and needs to be corrected NOW.

Nazarian has the authority to fix this.

Time is running out, as any planning appeals have a deadline of June 11.

Talk to and organize Your neighbors, and have every single one of them call, write and email Nazarian's office.

THE TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS AT STAKE !

If the proposed development goes through, it will not only demolish a DESIGNATED HISTORIC MONUMENT ...

The planned 5 story, 104 Unit 'Affordable Housing' project WITHOUT ANY parking spaces, will alter the infrastructure of Your neighborhood forever, bringing nightmare congestion, loitering, crime, drug dealing and prostitution with it, effectively annihilating your life as You know it.
